8 (12) Tarnsman of Gor by John Norman Tarnsman of Gor is by far the best Gor book I ever read. Even today years later, I feel the thrilling excitement I read when I was but a twelve-year-old boy. The plot and excitement were riveting and still hold me to this day. Tarnsman of Gor may not have been original, but it certainly added to and improved the Sword and Planet genre. This is the book I would reccomend to anyone who is planning to read Gor for the first time. I only wish that Norman had used this format for the entire series. Sure the scenes are intense and all, but something just seems to be missing from it. In many places I thought it would be nice of the pace was picked up here or there. 11 (7) Lara's Submission: (formerly titled Bird in a Cage) by Claire Thompson I don't usually like romances, but this one is different. Written from two points of view, it really got my attention and kept it the whole way through. This book was GREAT. I loved reading the two different points of view, Dom and sub, and knowing two different people actually wrote it. That made it a truly unique experience. I hope these two plan to write a sequel, because as far as I'm concerned the story was just getting started! If you like rough, sexy BDSM, exhibitionism and just plain ol romance, you should definitely check this one out. LOVED IT. 18 (9) Training to Pleasure by Julian Masters I am new to the BDSM scene and this was a wonderful book to read. It gives you a wonderful guide for a submissive to find her dominant. The right kind of dominant, one that is loving, growing, giving, in control and enjoys teaching, loving and sexually freeing his submissive! I am going to use this as a check list. James is my dream lover. I would also recommend that any dominant take a read to learn what it is submissives need, not just kink BUT dominance. The character's were amazing together (very believable and real) and I was on the edge of my seat. The only fault I found with this book was for personal reasons...near the end of the book the couple have a very hard session that involves some serious needle play and that was a major turn off for me. 24 (10) Masters of the Shadowlands by Cherise Sinclair This is the first book I've read by this author. What a fantastic find! I love a writer who's knowledge of the body, mind and bdsm (whether through research or experience) allows them to add romance, feelings, etc. into the mix. The depth given to the characters and story line make it hard to believe each story is less than two hundred pages. Being a hands on type of person, it is unfortunate for me her other stories are not available in print. The girl is not there because she wants to be, and therefore there is real suffering in her mind, which is not what I look for in these stories. I liked this book tremendously. Norman showed and described the savagery of the Kuri monsters from space. Marooned on Gor and commanded by those of their brethren from the steel cities, these creatures are tenacious to the extreme. The pitched battles they fought between the Torvaldslanders show a different aspect of Gor; this aspect is one we have seldom seen in the series. 44 (43) Slave Castle by Claire Thompson This is one of the first Claire Thompson books I ever read. It's edgy and sexy, though in the end it's a romance. I found the BDSM scenes intense and very real. Ms. Thompson is such a good writer, she makes any story real, breathing life into the characters, no matter how unlikely the scenario she creates for them. I especially like how she gets inside the heads of the Doms, helping us understand what motivates and moves them. It's an excellent book, though less of a pure romance than her later works. Desert city Tor is mentioned for the first time, as is the character Samos, soon to become a mainstay in the series. Troy is a London homicide detective of Russian heritage - his father an immigrant who became a very powerful and wealthy newspaper publisher. The series takes place between the 1930's and the sixties and although there is a chronology to these books, the series doesn't follow a calendar. Also several of the books, including this one, have been published under different titles, i.e. same book, different title depending on if it's the British or American version.
